Why does my monitor cascade to white and freeze?

Almost every time I try to play a game or run an intensive program like google earth, my screen kind of cascades to white starting from the bottom right hand corner and moves up to the upper left corner very quickly. My computer is left on but it completely freezes up and I cannot do anything. I am guessing it might be a hardware problem. Your thoughts?
